Zen moment: “I don’t really remember how old I was, but I went on some radio show and sang Mariah Carey’s Without You,” he says. “Me and another kid won the thing. Normally I don’t believe it when people say I’m good at something. But that was the first time I thought, ‘Hmm, maybe I am?’ ”

If you weren’t on Idol, what would you be doing: “Well, I’d just graduated high school and was going to go to Citrus College in Azusa (Calif.),” says Noriega. “So I guess I would be doing that, and still might. But I’ll probably take some time off first.”

Other than performer, what’s your dream job: “I’d probably be a talk show host or a model,” he says. “But someone would have to do a lot of Photoshop on my pimples.”

What are you most proud of: “My niceness and staying humble. Is that kind of corny?”

Judgment days: “I find Randy (Jackson) and Paula (Abdul) really constructive,” says Noriega. “I do love Simon (Cowell)’s guts, but he says stuff he just doesn’t need to. I guess I have a sort of love/hate relationship with him.”

Pinch him: “In the past, I’d dream about being on American Idol, so to actually be on the show, at this stage in the game, is just too much for me,” he says. “Sometimes I just go on YouTube to watch myself so I know it’s real. Except that Jailhouse Rock performance. That was so embarrassing.”

Watching everything change while I "grow up."
